Jolla smartphones will feature HERE maps and countless Android apps
The Finnish company Jolla announced that the integration of Nokia HERE maps on their Sailfish operating system is completed and now the app is going to become its default navigation. Not only that, the Sailfish will easily access Android apps as the two operating systems’ compatibility allows the upstart OS to run on Android phones. Back in September, Jolla got fully aware of the effects of the Nokia-Microsoft deal and reported that these events have strengthened the young company’s position. Only two months later in ‘Helsinki on November 13 Sailfish OS reached another major milestone by integrating HERE’s mapping and positioning technology alongside thousands of Android applications provided by Yandex.Store, an app store for Android.’
The Yandex.Store provides over 85000 apps in over 17 categories, including Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Viber , WeChat and everything a user could think of as well as a bunch of popular games. CEO Tomi Piemimaki sheds more light on Jolla’s current strategy to work with the most respectable service partners in specific market for a long-term strategic partnership. After some analysis of alternative Android app stores to use for their first markets in Europe, the chose Yandex’s offer for a co-operation in order to develop their app store for the needs of Sailfish customers.
