Viber launches a new version for Android and iOS and a desktop client
Viber has recently released its new version for Android and iOS. Viber 3.0 promises a brand new user experience. The app has been completely reworked from point zero. In addition to the mobile app, Viber has launched its first desktop version for cross-device calls, messaging and video calls. According to Viber’s CEO Talmon Marco, the development of the new software has begun in 2010 with no design deadlines at that time. Marco added that the renovated Viber will offer better quality voice calls and it will be as simple as possible.
The new version 3.0 resolves the problems with the security emerged earlier this year. The vulnerability lets third party to access your device by sending certain messages. This problem has been resolved now and with Viber 3.0 your device will be fully protected. Viber has also improved its VoIP engine. According to Marco, you can even make a call with a speed of just 8 Kbps, which is incredible. The voice quality improves with the speed growth and the voice calls are uninterrupted when switching from one connection to another – for example from cellular to WiFi. With the new version you can make video calls across Windows and OS X clients while a Linux client is also under development. At this moment, the voice calls are available only for the desktop client, but the company works on bringing the video to the mobile devices soon.
Now let’s look at the desktop version. With the software you can have a seamless messaging and calling experience across your devices – notebook or desktop computer and the handsets. You can easily switch any call from your desktop computer to your smartphone or vice versa just by tapping of a call transfer button. The messaging is also seamless. Initially Viber rings on all devices, but when you start using one, the other is muted and you don’t get notification alerts on it. At the same time, the messages are synced over the devices – if you delete a message on one device, it disappears on the others connected devices. Viber’s CEO adds that the platform is still mobile-oriented and you must have a mobile phone to sign-up for the service.
