Forecast: a 58.7% growth of the tablet shipments in 2013, tablets to outpace the total PC market by 2015
International Data Corporation (IDC) – the premier global provider of market intelligence for the mobile and PC industry has just published its latest report about the tablet shipments estimates for the next four years (up to 2017). According to the graphics, the worldwide tablet shipments will continue to grow – this year the tablet industry will face a 58.7% growth on year’s base or 229.3 million tablets will be sold, compared with 144.5 million units in 2012. Meanwhile the PC market continues to fall and a negative growth is expected for second year in a row. If the market patterns extrapolate to the next two years, IDC predicts the tablet shipments to surpass the entire PC market in 2015.
The IDC report clearly marks that the major shift in the PC industry is imminent and the mobile devices will be at the forefront of the tech-business in the near future. Despite the global economic downturn, the IT sectors will continue to grow, following the same patterns. For 2013, the tablet shipments will surpass the portable PC sales, and this tendency is strongly influenced by the consumer market. For the average users, tablets offer simple and more elegant solution than desktop PCs. Speaking about the B2B market, the traditional desktop computers will continue to play a significant role, and they just can’t be replaced.
International Data Corporation has also analyzed the patterns in the tablet industry. Being at the forefront, Apple is losing some of the market share. With the immense development of low-cost Android tablets, the Americans are under pressure which made the average selling price of a tablet to drop by 10.8% on year’s base to $318. To compare, the ASP of a desktop PC is almost double – $635. Tablet industry experienced another major shift – in screen sizes. While in 2011, the market was ruled by the larger tablets, in 2013 the sub-8-inch models will take control, having 55% market share, IDC summarizes.
