ZTE enters the market of rugged devices with G601U
After a number of manufacturers including Sony, Casio and Kyocera launched their Android- based rugged smartphones, now it’s time for another company to enter this specific market segment of durable handsets. The Chinese leader ZTE has just certified a model codenamed G601U, expected to go on sale in the home market soon.
ZTE G601U has a typical design for a rugged smartphone, similar to the latest Kyocera and Casio devices. As expected, you won’t find anything impressive in these models. Instead, all devices from this market segment are quite modest in terms of specs, because they all have one main function – to be durable and ensure at least a full day use.
The G601U, whose name should be changed to a more memorable one by the launch, packs a 4 inch screen with an 800 x 480 pixel resolution. The dimensions of this model are 127.4 x 66 x 12 mm and it weighs 156 grams. There is a 5 MP camera on the rear side, coupled with a VGA video calling camera. It is powered by a dual-core processor running at 1.3 GHz supported by 1 GB of RAM. The rugged phone comes with a microSD slot for storage expansion, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS. ZTE G601U is fueled by a 2500 mAh battery and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The battery seems to be pretty enough to ensure a full day of usage. In short, this is a rugged phone with average size and weight and low-end specs.
Further details such as availability and pricing have not been revealed. There is no word whether we will see the rugged ZTE model outside China or not.
