Canonical officially released Ubuntu 13.10 for desktops and mobile devices
So far the 2013 is one of the most interesting and exciting years in the mobile world. In the past few months the main players on the mobile arena introduced innovative devices, like the smartwatches and the Google Glass, and breakthrough technologies, like the OLED displays to name a mere few. In 2013 we also see the rapid development of new operating systems, like Firefox OS and Ubuntu among others.
Yesterday the company that is developing the Ubuntu platform, Canonical officially launched the Ubuntu 13.10 for phones and desktops. Canonical has been working on the mobile version of Ubuntu for years now. Yesterday the platform was finally officially presented in the mobile world. Along with the Ubuntu 13.10 the company provides a nice abundance of native applications such as calendar app, browser, calculator, weather etc. The relatively new platform will need more and more apps and programs in the future, therefore Canonical launched a full SDK for developers who want to create various apps for Ubuntu.
During the launching of the platform, the company put the focus on one of its new features called Smart Scope for Ubuntu Dash. It is an advanced tool for more effective searches. The Smart Scope can “scope” or blend search results of different searches of users in order to provide more accurate and fulfilling results according to users’ preferences. The more the users use the program, the more improved results it will deliver to them.
Earlier this year, Canonical tested the waters for the Ubuntu platform by releasing Touch Developer Preview for a few of the Nexus models running on Android. However just yesterday, the company officially released the platform for mobile devices along with the version for desktops. The devices that can work on Ubuntu at the moment are Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Galaxy Nexus. The Ubuntu 13.10 can be downloaded from HERE. The company made a hint for the upcoming new models smartphones running on the platform that might be announced and launched in 2014.
