Microsoft announces Windows Phone 8 Update 3
The third major update of Windows Phone 8 OS is now official. Microsoft has published all details about the upcoming update called Update 3 or General Distribution release 3. Currently the Update 3 is available for developers through the new Preview Program. To qualify and install the update you need to have a developer unlocked device and to be registered as a Windows Phone developer. For all other customers the update will come in a few weeks. The devices that are expected on October 22 in Abu Dhabi will arrive with Update 3 pre-installed.
The Windows Phone 8 update will bring several new features and improvements. It will bring 1080p display support for the new models, and OEMs will be finally able to use quad-core processors. Users can close apps in multitasking view by tapping on the X. Update 3 will also bring custom tones for texts, reminders, voicemail and email. Microsoft promises better storage management. The Other Storage issue was one of the biggest problems in the previous releases. Now, Microsoft has added new storage settings, so it would be easier for you to free up space and manage temporary files.
Another new feature is the Screen Rotation Lock – it allows you to prevent the screen from rotating. GDR3 will add Driving Mode feature – it turns all notifications while you are driving. With Driving Mode you can set a custom text for reply. The Driving Mode starts automatically when your phone is connected to Bluetooth.
General Distribution Release 3 will start rolling out for all Windows Phone 8 devices before the end of 2013. Meanwhile, many users are still waiting for GDR2.
