Samsung working on 5G mobile broadband allowing speed of tens of Gbps
Samsung is aimed at commercializing the new high-speed 5G mobile broadband technology within seven years, the company has announced today. While many parts of the world still have 3G networks, Samsung is working on delivering the next high-speed fifth generation of networks. According to Samsung, the new 5G networks will be several hundred times faster than the 4G LTE Advanced technology which will be launched later this year. What does it mean? Users can enjoy much higher speeds – up to several tens of Gbps per base station. Or they can download a movie in less than one second or transfer much larger files quickly.
It the initial tests, Samsung used 64 antenna elements and an adaptive array transceiver technology to transmit data at a frequency of 28GHz. The data has been transmitted with a speed of 1.056 Gbps at the distance of 2 kilometers. Samsung says that this new technology could be the solution to the radio propagation loss – a major obstacle for higher speeds in today’s mobile networks using bands.
Samsung sees the high-speed mobile services as the future of the mobile industry. Samsung explains: there won’t be any limitation to the data transmitted. Users can transmit huge digital files within few seconds and they can enjoy a plenty of new services like real time video streaming, 3G games and watching high-definition movies. That’s why Samsung plans to accelerate its R&D of the future 5G network and to commercialize the technology before 2020. Samsung believes that 5G will change the mobile communications forever, that’s why winning the race and launching the first 5G network will be crucial for the company’s success after 2020. Other companies have also started their R&D phases – like the Chinese governmental organization IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, which has been created in February 2012. The European Commission will also invest 50 million EUR to bring the new technology to the market.
