The petition for smartphones unlocking gets a respond
As we reported to you earlier, there was a petition on the We the people section of the White House website – it asked for the right of customers to unlock their phones legally. In order to be considered by the White House, the petition had to get at least 100 000 signs and it got it just 2 days before the end time. Now the White House gave respond to more than 114 000 of us that signed the petition and, surprisingly, it is in our benefit.
The White House considers it perfectly proper to be able to unlock your phone after your contract is over and even goes further by suggesting the same rule to apply to tablets as well. A group of experts in the fields of technology, telecommunications and copyright was formed and they reached to the conclusion that everybody should be free to unlock their phones absolutely legally.
According to the White House, this will be of use especially for the second-hand devices bought or received as gift – the new owner should have the right to choose his/her carrier without restrictions. The White House suggests a few options to make this come true. According to it the law should be changed in such a way as not to allow the criminal law or any technological locks to put any restrictions. The White House promises that this will be cleared out with the help of NTIA and FCC.
It seems the system is working – the people asked and the White House came to their defence. Let’s hope that it will not give up and will help creating such an unbreakable law that will give us the right to do whatever we want with our phones.
