Step-by-step instructions for rooting of Nexus 5
Google Nexus 5 is one of the most eagerly anticipated devices in the tech world this year. The proof for this is the abundance of leaks and rumors for the high-end smartphone that were satisfying our curiosity until the new generation Nexus phone debuted on the mobile arena. Another clear sign for the huge users’ interest for Nexus 5 are the sells numbers – the 16GB variant of the phone run out of stock the same day the model was officially introduced and launched. Therefore it is not a surprise that a lot of users are looking for instructions how to root their devices in order to take advantage from more possibilities and capabilities. You will need to install CWM custom recovery before you get started. Even though the process for rooting is not complicated, it is highly recommended to follow the written steps and to do all the backups in order not to lose any important data. The described guide is eligible only for the Google Nexus 5 model smartphone. Do not try it on any other mobile devices. Keep in mind that the attempt to root your device is considered as voiding the warranty. There is a risk to lose all your data during the unlocking of Nexus 5. The main files that will be needed for the unlocking are: the root file SuperSU and the custom recovery file CWM.
The first step is the preparation. Before you begin with the unlocking of the smartphone, backup all your messages, contacts, call logs, APN Settings, Apps and other files, like pictures, songs and documents. It is recommended to fully charge your device before proceeding to the rooting. The USB debugging in your phone must be enabled. You can check whether this is done by going to Settings – Developer Options – USB debugging. Your PC must be prepared as well – all the drivers of the USB of Nexus 5 should be installed.

The first file is CF Auto Root that can be downloaded from HERE.
Download the Fastboot zip file from HERE. Then extract it into Android-SDK-Windows Platform-Tools Directory.
The next file to download is SuperSU Root file – HERE.
Download also CWM Recovery image – HERE.
The rooting begins:
Use the USB cable to connect your Nexus 5 to your PC. Then copy the SuperSU file to the root storage without creating folders.
In order to continue with the rooting you need to get it into Fastboot mode by turning it off and then press and hold Volume Down + Power Button. If you see some text on the display it means you have booted into Fastboot mode
The next step requires going to the Android-SDK-Windows Platform-Tools Directory and open command prompt. In order to do this you need to enter cmd into Run. You should type the following command in the Command prompt:
fastboot flash recovery hammerhead-cwm-6.0.4.4-unofficial.img
In the next step you should select the Recovery option from the Fastboot menu. Then you enter the CWM recovery mode.
What you should do next is to choose the option install Zip from SD Card and then select the SuperSU file (from the root storage). Navigate through it with the volume buttons. Select via the power button.
The last step is after the installation is completed. You need to select the ++++Go Back++++ option that will get you back to the recovery menu. Then select the Reboot system now option.
