Samsung Galaxy S4 chipsets
We saw Samsung Galaxy S4 being announce in the Radio City Music Hall in New York. The event started just a few minutes after 7 pm and the audience witnessed how a lot of the rumours came into existence. For example, it turned out that the flagship Samsung Galaxy S4 will have Smart Scroll, Smart Pause and Smart Rotate, as well as floating touch and air gestures. However, J.K. Shin, Ryan Biden and Will Chase devoted the greatest part of the conference to the functions and the features and not to the various hardware parts. One of the most important hardware rumours proved true, too – that the processor of Samsung Galaxy S4 will depend on the market.
The customers in the USA will get Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 – a quad-core processor clocked at 1.9GHz rate. The processor is probably chosen because it integrates a 4G LTE radio and will be able to use all the 4G networks in the USA. The processor is really powerful and it always shows more than 12 000 point on the Quadrant test, which is much more than what is needed by an Android smartphone and its applications.
The version that will be used internationally is with Exynos 5 Octa clocked at 1.6GHz. This processor is classified as an octa-core and it really has four cores, but only four of them are used simultaneously. It is based on the big.LITTLE technology – 4 powerful Cortex A15 processors are combined with 4 Cortex A7 processors that are not too powerful. When you exploit your phone a lot and use heavy app, the powerful A15 are used by the smartphone. When you only browse or use some other basic functions, the phone works with A7. This is great for the power and energy efficiency, but will it be ok with the performance? Exynos 5 Octa has an integrated PowerVR SGX544 GPU so when it comes to graphics, the phone will rock.
So there will be two versions of Samsung Galaxy S4, depending on the area of the world where they will be sold. In the USA we will see the device with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 clocked at 1.9GHz and with integrated 4G LTE radio, while in other parts of the world the device will come with Exynos 5 Octa clocked at 1.6GHz, using the big.LITTLE technology and with integrated PowerVR SGX544 graphic processing unit.
