New low-cost MediaTech chip released by year end
The big.LITTLE architecture processors are quite popular nowadays. But these chips have some problems especially in the energy efficiency and balanced performance. The big.LITTLE architecture is based on one group of cores with low power, pared with the same number of more powerful cores. But the chip uses only the big or the little cores at any time. That means if the processor is a quad-core, only two cores are running at any time. For example, during the simple day to day tasks only the less power hungry cores are activated, but when the things get busy the powerful cores take the control and start running.
In fact, the big .LITTLE chips have many other problems. In addition to the above mentioned, we can add that they are pretty expensive to consumers. That’s why, MediaTek is designing a new chip model based on the big.LITTLE architecture that is going to be not so expensive. The new chip model is codenamed MT8135 and it will have 2 by 2 cores, instead of 4 by 4 in the Galaxy S4. The cores inside will be two low power Cortex A15 cores and two Cortex A7 cores. MT8135 is rumored to be less power hungry than Galaxy S4, but powerful enough for a decent mid-range smartphone. Rumors say it will be clocked at 1GHz.
The positives of designing such a chipset are numerous. It will be cheaper to manufacture and it will decrease the total cost of any future smartphone. It will use only 2 cores at any time, operating at a lower speed, therefore it won’t have to tolerate with higher temperatures. The future Media Tech chip will be designed for mid-range devices and it may be a good deal for any on a budget. MT8135 will be released by year end, according to the sources.
