HTC overtakes Samsung in Japan, HTC Butterfly J with brisk sales
HTC has managed to capture the fifth place on the smartphone market in Japan in the first quarter of the year, according to the market research company IDC Japan. HTC has taken this position from Samsung, who are now on the sixth place in the local market. The Japanese version of the HTC Butterfly has become very popular in Japan and that is the main reason for this market change. Now, HTC has expanded its market share up to 6.6% with the help of the KDDI Corp carrier, making good marketing and sales efforts.
The overall smartphone market in the country has grown by 4 percent compared with the last year – 6.81 million units were shipped during the first quarter. Apple still leads the market with its 39.6 percent share, which is sixth quarter in a row leading the market. The Japanese company Sharp occupies the second place with 14.6, while the next places are for Sony (13.3%) and Fujitsu (8.3%).
Now, the highly popular HTC Butterfly J is within the top 10 phones in Japan. The device entered the list since its introduction in December 2012. The 5-inch water proof handset enjoys huge sales and it is currently ranked on the 9-th place in the BCN Inc.’s ranking. Additionally, the carrier has lowered the price of the device. Initially, It was priced at $347 upon its introduction, and now it could be get for $0 if you sign a new contract. Enjoying higher popularity, HTC has made the decision to upgrade the Butterfly S in Taiwan. The new model will be announced on June 19. Meanwhile another new device, named Butterfly 2 is expected to arrive during the fourth quarter.
