Google is looking for a victory against the patent troll Rockstar
Google might not get lucky in protecting its partners
The patent troll company Rockstar is famous for suing basically every company that has invested in the Android ecosystem. For those who haven’t followed the story, Rockstar is pretty much a shell company that doesn’t create anything and employs engineers to look over products from other tech companies. The company has been created by giants such as Apple, Microsoft and BlackBerry and others that have purchased the patent portfolio of Nortel, a carrier in Canada. The engineers who work for Rockstar have one task and that is to see which companies they can sue for patent infringement. As we mentioned earlier, it’s a patent troll.
Google, on the other hand, who believe this game should be initiated by two players, has found a way to earn a victory against Rockstar and according to the latest report, it has filed a complaint earlier this week. In San Jose court room, the Google team asked the jury to rule in its favour, asGoogle has never infringing on any of the seven patents of Rockstar.
According to Google, the troll company has placed clouds over Android and any tech industry affiliated. The whole concern of the company lays on the Google Nexus 4, Google Nexus 5 and Google Nexus 10 series, and at the same time Google it trying to protect its partners as well. Other names involved are ASUS, HTC, Huawei, LG, Samsung and ZTE, however Google might not get lucky in protecting them as well.
In a little history lesson, the US patent appeals court recently has ruled that Cisco wasn’t able to protect companies who bought its routers, from patent infringement. In that order of thoughts, the same precedent could work against Google and any attempt of the company to sue Rockstar on the behalf of its partners.
On the other hand, there’s still a back-up plan as if the judges refuse, Google will still have enough time to fight against the patent troll.
