HTC Desire U Hands-On
Introduction
HTC Desire U is a mid-range device announced by the company a few days before CES in January. We know the battle in the top levels of the mobile market is severe and it is very hard for any company to beat Samsung and Apple, but the mid sees some rivalry, too. The Desire U, however, has the necessary specifications and features to be competitive enough for a place among the mid-rangers.
Design
Speaking of the design, it is typical of HTC – neat and clear. HTC Desire U weighs 119g – only 5 grams more than iPhone 5. The device is rounded in the corners and has the dimensions of 118.5×62.3×9.3mm – it is 9.3mm thick – not quite slender, indeed, but it is a mid-ranger after all. All in all, the device is easy to hold and carry in the pocket.
Display
HTC Desire U comes with a 4-inch Super LCD Capacitive Display, which is perfect for a mid-range device. The resolution is 800×480, with 16M colours and 233 pixels per inch. The screen supports multi touch.
Hardware
The processor of HTC Desire U is single core and is clocked at 1GHz. We know that the popular processors now are with more than one cores, but surely this will do ok with the Ice Cream Sandwich. It is accompanied by 512MB Operative Memory and has 4GB storage capacity available for the users. The device supports microSD up to 32GB.
Sound and Camera
The sound is nothing unusual, however the device sports Best Audio sound enchancement for a better quality. The camera is a typical mid-range 5MP shooter that takes pictures with resolution 2592×1944 and has autofocus and Led Flash. The videos are captured with WVGA resolution.
Software
Speaking of the Software, HTC Desire U comes with an Ice Cream Sandwich as we mentioned in the previous section. Of course, it employs also the Sense User Interface, which visually modifies the system a lot. The software provides you with the experience of both Android and HTC. The typical social network clients like Facebook and Google talk are also integrated.
Price and Availability
HTC Desire U will launch first in Taiwan in the first quarter of 2013. Its equivalent price in US dollars will be about $249. In Taiwan it will be available with contract. We don’t know when we will see the device in other parts of the world.
Conclusion
HTC Desire U is really a mid-range smartphone and although it copes well with multi-tasking, it may has some troubles when trying to handle apps with heavy graphics. The device is perfect for those who need something modest that will help them with conducting their business, work, or enjoy some nice Android apps.
