Nexus 7 outsold iPad in Japan
December holidays have passed and now we’re able to check some sales results. According to data released by BCN, Google’s ASUS-made Nexus 7 outperformed Apple’s entire tablet lineup in Japan over the entire holiday season. A survey of 2,400 electronic stores across the country showed the Nexus 7 captured 44.4 % of the market in December, while Apple’s share came in at 40.1 %. Devices made by local companies like Sony and Fujitsu got only 2 to 3 % of the sales over the same period.
Price is considered to be the main reason for this triumph. In Japan, Nexus 7 is priced at 19,800 yen (about $224) for a 16-gigabyte model, which is $100 less than the iPad mini offered for 28,800 yen (about $326). Other factors have also been noticed, such as lack of inventory for the iPad mini due to supply chain issues.
About 3.6 million tablets were sold in December 2012, nearly three times more than during the same period in 2011. That number is expected to rise to 4.9 million units in 2013.
