Flappy Bird is sweeping the world and earning $50,000 a day from your frustration
The game was developed for non-profit by Dong Nguyen, however it became an overnight success
And you thought Candy Crush was frustrating. Think again! You can run, but you can’t hide from the Flappy Bird and its enormous lips. It has been reported that the game, developed by Dong Nguyen of .GEARS Studios, is making over $50,000 per day from the in-app advertisements alone. He chose the free to play app style, because he figured it would gain more interest and be more accessible to the audience, not to mention that it’s what’s popular in Japan at the moment.
According to Nguyen, he built the game in the evenings during in his free time. He had no intention of getting famous or had any idea what an overnight success it would become, he even posted a request on his Twitter account to kindly be left alone. It’s obvious that the game is inspired by the Nintendo classic Super Mario, which is one of his favorite games series growing up.
Flappy Bird is pretty basic in term of gameplay. Basically you get to play with a yellow bird with a big beak and all you have to do is tap to flap your wings and fly and avoid the pipes along the way. Your objective is to try to get 4 medals – bronze, silver, gold (hard) and platinum (very hard).
This begs the question, why exactly is this game so popular and makes people want to throw their mobile devices into a volcano? Simple, it’s both very hard and addictive and the more you lose the game, the more you want to try again and beat your high score and boast about it to your friends. People keep commenting that it “ruined their lives”, but they just can’t put it down.
Flappy Bird was last updated to version 1.3 on January 30th, 2014. Its size is 894KB and it requires Android 2.2 and up. You can download the game for free from HERE.
