Sony presents a new app with Xperia Z1S – Background Defocus
Background Defocus lets you manually choose the focus point
Hidden among bigger releases, Sony introduced at CES 2014 a new camera app that lets you enhance your photos and make them look amazing. Background Defocus is available first for the Sony Xperia Z1S. The device, announced at the event, is expected to go on sale later in January. At a later stage, Sony will make the application available for the rest members of the Xperia family. A Sony representative has demoed Background Defocus at CES. Watch the video below:
The app is simple. First, you chose a focus point and then you press the shutter button to take the photo. After some time for processing, you will see a simple menu in which you can change the blurriness and add distortion. How does Background Defocus work? The application takes two separate images at different exposures. Then the app uses the information to combine the images into a single interactive picture where you can blend the blur. The feature reminds of the HDR apps that use the same technique but delivers different results.
Background Defocus app has its limitations. First, it requires sufficient lighting and specific framing. According to the company, the good distance is about 2 feet from the object. For good results, the background should be at least 3 feet behind the object. Other limitations are connected with the camera quality. We don’t expect the application to work on all models since many of them have not so good cameras. Even the Z1 lineup has limitations, leading to inability to produce some effects easily achievable with DRSLs and compact cameras. Alongside Background Defocus, the new Xperia Z1s has other interesting camera apps like Timeshift Burst, AR Effects, Info-Eye and Social Live.
