LG brought WebOS back to life in a Smart TV
LG will continue its efforts in Enyo development
Almost 9 month ago it came clear that WebOS could come back to life thanks to LG who became its new owner after buying it from HP. According to the deal, LG would acquire websites, documents and source codes behind the client side of the almost dead operating system. We were curious about LG’s plans with the WebOS especially after the company announced they’ll be focusing on adapting the tech towards certain future TV efforts.
Back then, CTO Dr. Skott Ahn from LG claimed that the company would apply it only to TV, however in the future it might get extended for other devices. Unfortunately, there has been a dead silence since and we thought that LG isn’t quite sure what to do with WebOS, especially when the company kept silent when asked what benefits it would bring.
Today everything changes as we can say for sure that WebOS lives. Well, it won’t apply to a Pre or TouchPad, however a TV is still a great start… or restart, to be more accurate. So here’s another good reason to bite your nails in anticipation for CES 2014, as LG will use the stage in order to unveil its first smart TV powered by WebOS.
Before you ask, yes, LG will continue its efforts in Enyo development as a part of bringing the operating system back. The cross platform open-source JavaScript framework Enyo is still in the game, so that’s another thing to look forward to.
Now, the LG HDTV will run WebOS powered by a dual-core processor coated at 2.2GHz with 1.5GB DRAM chips and it’s said to build in low to mid-range phone in order to power the operating system. The good part is that the 50-incher is still more affordable that HTC One Max or Sony Xperia Z Ultra.
The rest? We’ll just have to wait until next month.
