Nokia with RAW DNG support for Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520
When Nokia enabled RAW output for its Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 phablet, many people might have been sceptical when it comes to the RAW files quality; however Nokia shot few sample DNG files in its Nokia Conversation blog. The DNG files that were captured with Nokia Lumia 1020 are available for download and their quality is extremely high. If you check those out, you’ll be impressed to see that once they’re loaded into Lightroom 5 and Photoshop, the files work perfectly fine and it’s almost unbelievable they were made by a phone.
According to Nokia Conversations, this will be a first for smartphones. The Nokia Lumia 1020 can save photos in lossless DNG format, which means the user can define the noise filtering, sharping and tone-mapping on a PC. And unlike the RAW files you’ve got used to, the DNG files in Nokia Lumia 1020 respond to Photoshop editing and you can revisit them to work with an advanced technology.
‘Photography enthusiasts have a cause for celebration. The Nokia Lumia 1020 and the new Nokia Lumia 1520 will be able to save your photos as lossless RAW files (in “DNG” format), allowing maximum flexibility when editing the images on your computer or laptop.’ we got from Nokia. Also Adobe is excited to see Nokia be the first to bring advanced, RAW imaging technology to the smart phone market by utilizing the openly documented Digital Negative (DNG) format as part of their leadership efforts. By adding DNG support within the Nokia Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520, Nokia is dramatically improving the artistic control and flexibility available to their customers. Meanwhile, the head of imaging technologies at Nokia Juha Alakarhu commented that “This is one of the most exciting announcements of the week for me personally. It has been a key request from so many of our users for a long time now. People who are passionate about photography can be more creative and do more with the images from their Lumia than ever before.”
