LG is planning a flexible OLED smartphone before year’s end
According to The Wall Street Journal, LG is under development of the world’s first flexible OLED phone which will be released before the end of 2013. OLED is a new technology allowing creation of beautiful and efficient displays using light emitting materials. When we are speaking for flexible OLED displays, we must mention that they are still in the R&D phase. Rumors say that both LG and Samsung are pretty close to launch the first revolutionary device with a flexible display. Actually, Samsung showed one of its prototypes in January 2013 – a so called YOUM bendable display panel.
The first flexible OLED phone is expected to be thinner and lighter than traditional phones on the market now. At the same time, the display will be much stronger because it won’t be covered with glass. Working on bringing Flexible OLED displays into mass production in smartphones would not be easy and it’s in fact very challenging, especially in the encapsulation process.
LG made clear indications at its latest conference that the first OLED phone will roll out before the end of 2013. Yoon Bu-hyun stated that this will be the culmination of a long R&D process in the company. LG has been developing a curved display since 2008 when the first 320 x 240 prototype was demonstrated. From then on, LG is in a race with Samsung for bringing the first phone with a bendable screen on the market. LG recently announced the launch of the first curved OLED TV before the end of the year. It will have a 55- inch screen that is supposed to improve the viewing experience and reduce the screen edge distortion.
